I am fairly new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I loaded LL for the first time just a few days ago. I just wanted to see what all the fuss is about.

So far I am VERY impressed. Anyone who thinks it doesn't look as good as Windows or Mac is just plain stupid...or blind...no offense intended to the blind. It looks great.

I wanted to build a RAID array to test stability for possible future use in a backup image server. It took me a few hours to get everything figured out (my brain runs has been trained for many years on Windows lol :) ). Built a RAID0 array and it runs like a champ. I know...RAID0 is not technically RAID at all, but I just wanted to do it. Next I will see if I can get it to do RAID 0+1. If that doesn't work I'll go with RAID 5.

Everything is running very smoothly. It will take me a while to learn the ins and outs of Ubuntu, but I'm picking it up fairly quickly.

I think the main thing that is keeping Linux (more specifically Ubuntu) out of the spotlight is how tech-savvy you need to be to really manipulate it. I don't know what bugs some of you are mentioning, but then again I haven't been able to put Lucid through the full gamut of testing. It has worked very well for me.

I wish I were able to play my steam games on it. If I could combine the stability of Lucid with the power of my personal machine all of my games would be incredible.

Anyway...just wanted to say I am very impressed and pleased with Lucid. Great work.

My only complaint is that the Linux community seems to have an air of arrogance sometimes, or at least it is perceived that way. And it is evident in the OS. Not just anyone could do whatever they want with it. Don't think of Microsoft and Mac as "evil." They are not evil. In their own way each is very powerful and offer things that Linux simply doesn't give you. As for stability, I use Windows XP Ultimate by Johnny on my machine and it has never failed me. NOT ONCE. I think it is wrong to think that only one OS is the best out there. The XP version that I use is best for what I do. Mac is best for others.

Overall I really like Ubuntu, but at this point I am still too ignorant to how it works to know how to make it do the things I want lol. Wish me luck :) If any of you have any useful tips or can point me in the right direction for instruction I would greatly appreciate it.

This past weekend my grandson brought his laptop to me to see if I could get it working. It had a corrupted windows system and would'nt even boot. I installed Ubuntu Lucid Linux from a CD that I had and the laptop took it and installed the OS perfectly. I have one happy grandchild. He should have no problem with Linux (kids are much more tech savvy than us older folks.) I have been running Linux for about three years now and will never go back to Windows. I must admit that my computer originally had Windows on it and still has. The last time I opened Windows was about four months ago and that was to dump everything in order to take Windows back to it's bare0bones roots.

Listen, I have the stupid habit of trying Linux once and again. I try every bloody new version in deep just because I like to follow what is new and always have the stupid hope that the new version is going to be finally usable.

But it's not. It is always crap. From the beginning. My Windows 7 with Aero just flies in my cheap laptop, it is absolutely fast same as XP was. But I still have to find a Linux distro that is not slow as a turtle and full of bugs in every possible way right from the first day.

Honestly, Linux is great if you can't afford Windows, but the difference is huge in a million and one issues. Linux is and surely will always be a piece of crap and a toy for computer nerds and nothing else.

Ubuntu Lucis is as awful (and ugly) as any other version. Nothing really changes. Make it fast, smooth, accurate, well finished, good looking, and forget about that lot of technical questions that users never notice.

Just installed Ubuntu 10.4 (netbook version) on my netbook...dual boot with Windows 7...my first Linux look and see. I've been a forever Windows user. First impression...wow. Simply awesome performance. Great look and feel (actually prefer it not to look like windows). Simplicity at its finest in installing software. Installed some dev IDEs...great stuff...I think this is a definite viable alternative to windows...the apps will come...gonna go write one now.

I have lucid on a laptop and it works wonderfully. I tried upgrading to it from Karmic on my dual core and was dismayed to find that it barely functioned. Slowest O/S I've seen since windows 98 with several hundred malware programs running in the background.
I'd sure like to know how to get Lucid working the way it does on my laptop!
Anyone else had this problem?

i've been an ubuntu user for more than a year since i left microsoft and fell in love with ubuntu. i just installed 10.04 in my laptop... while i had a lot of concerns with karmic koala (like being so buggy and slow, which frustrated me enough i've thought of trying mandriva and open suse), this one is very fast! i love it. i think the ubuntu that i used to love (8.10 when i started and it was super fast compared to my windows xp), is back.

whoa , that is what we call a troll, now if he want something that "works" and something that "is unique" then why he don't create his OS?? ...my post comes late to this but as i write this comment im on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx , everything works perfectly , some tweaks around the OS and is the way i want it, no complaints!! .

This is truly a big improvement in comparison with previous Buntu distros, i was really surprised when i booted side by side my Windows 7 Machine and My Ubuntu Machine.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 last week on my 2 year old Asus laptop.

To my surprise everything worked this time out of the box, including sound, webcam, wireless and my old HP4300C scanner. As a matter of fact the scanner does not work with Vista.

Start up is not the 10 seconds I've heard about. From switched off, my laptop takes about 45 seconds till fully working including making contact with the internet using wireless. Vista takes about 2 minutes to do the same.

The OS itself works well. No sign of instability and more responsive than Vista. A few applications I downloaded on the other hand did not work properly, but these are less common applications, so it is not a big issue. If they crash they can be closed without any stability issues to the OS itself.

The looks of Vista are still nicer I think, although the Lucid Lynx can be changed enough to please me.

My conclusion is that Ubuntu 10.04 is a serious step forward in getting to an OS that is really useable and hence a serious Windows alternative for the average user. My only concern is hardware support of exotic hardware and specific software that a user might need.

I use an HP Pavilion DV6-1110ax and the 9.04 version was a headache to run, provided i used an internet connection through my mobile phone that the 9.04 would not even care to respond to even after several tries...
Today, however, Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx has great looks, good functionality and what more, i dint even need to find the drivers for my phone to get connected to the internet. Still more surprising was that as i configured the connection for the very first time, the OS knew which number to dial from just the name of the service provider. Liked it really. Great one. Thinking about leaving my Windows 7 professional original as a sidetracked OS!!!

I am new to Ubuntu and and the whole Linux scene. Last week I tried Ubuntu. Earlier this week I tried Kubuntu. Both clean installs of the 10.04 release, just testing.

I think the big problem with sound and Ubuntu is the PulseAudio. Ubuntu would not properly recognise my sound card. So it would fall back to OSS through PulseAudio. OSS I believe does not allow more than one pogram at a time to use sound. Legacy thing I guess.

Kubuntu on the other hand found my sound card properly and works great. No missing sound. No PulseAudio or OSS in the way.

That issue combined with how great the KDE environment is compared to GNome has me stating with Kubuntu. So now, I am dual booting Windows Vista(came on this computer) and Kubuntu and couldnt be happier.

I reinstalled Vista so it was "clean". I use it just for gaming and a couple of apps that there simply is no substitute for in Linux.

Well, I realize I'm posting a bit late for this article, but it being the 5 of May as I'm writing, I've had some time to sit and play with Ubuntu 10.4, and I'm delighted to say that it has been one of the best experiences I have ever had with an operating system. And that's saying something. I'm not a die hard Linux fan, actually, I've hardly ever used it. I build my own computers, usually a combination of recycled parts and new ones as needed, and that mix has never been good for Linux. I've never even gotten another distro to install. I have had better luck with Ubuntu, but I have still been plagued with plenty of problems once its installed. With this version of Ubuntu, I've been wowed and amazed. It has all of the flair of the major operating systems being released right now, and all of the functions I need. And as a tech that is used to having to help others through the installation of operating systems, I'm confident that I could hand over a copy of the CD to someone else and not even have to worry about them trying to install it. Its that quick, and that easy.
As some one who has almost exclusively used Microsoft software for almost two decades, I'm impressed, and I'm not sure I'm going back to windows for anything but gaming. If Ubuntu could solve that without the use of wine, I'd probably switch over everything I do to Ubuntu 10.4. I really am that impressed by it, because I've never thought a community driven operating system could have that much polish and support.

Have been using it for several months to play various versions of Diablo games from Blizzard without any problems.

Since two months I have placed 9.10 on both our machines. It does not work flawless for my wife (who is a real computer illiterate) but it works. No more freezing up because of programs running in the background. Machines are a core-duo and an i7-920). I have tried distributions for about 5 years and I believe that at this level it really could start to work.
And for the nah sayers: the list of people I have helped with their broken windows machine is long, very long. Also in the windows world there is always this friend, nephew or simular required.

ubuntu is a very good, stable os, but i don't think it's good enough for genral desktop use, hardware vendors don't release drivers for linux, to get some things working often invloves using cryptic commands from the command line, also some of the alternative programs such as open office, are no where near as good as the proprietary versions, trying to get devices such as blackberry's or ipods synchronized correctly is troublesome, if at all possible. if it was not for these issues, i would be running linux no doubt about it, but i can't see these problems being sorted anytime soon.

I am impressed with lucid lynx I have been running the alphas since they came out a couple of months ago - I havent experienced one crash. And from the time I hit the on button to the time my desktop is up is just 19s. My wifi is up and running within 30s of switch on. Thats very impressive, OK I'm on a net book with ssd drives but I have nothing but praise for this version.

ive turned a a half dozen ppl onto ubuntu over the last quarter year. some of them are so tech leery, i was absolutely surprised to see one in particular embrace ubuntu so readily... as for me, i would completely ditch windows, but there is one HUGE problem for me. i jaiblbreak and mod my iphone all the time. there was a release for redsn0w a while back for linux, but its obsolete now. i keep dual boot xp for this purpose, which sux. even virtualbox xp would be better, but usb support is limited. another handy idea would be something along the line of wine but for darwin/mac. ppl hate change, and more would get their feet wet and learn to swim if they could acclimatize first without diving in and being stuck without their favourite apps.

Anyway, I also feel the same. I 'll use what ever best suited best for me. For long it was plain DOS programs... then win95,98SE and WinXP. (Exclude WinME and Vista- these wont work for me!) I tried win 7 and like it and then ditch it... nothing new that can surpass Karmic tech - Just a lot more eyecandy.

And right now the best OS/ app for me is Ubuntu Linux with MS Office 2007 (Dont like OOO).

Again, quit complaining... use what do you want to use...
